How to Set Up an Ergonomic Workspace

Creating a productive workspace is not just about decorating your desk or keeping things tidy. Comfort plays a huge role in enhancing your productivity as well! Having an ergonomic workspace doesn’t just keep you comfortable and prevent the likelihood of developing body aches and pains, it also improves your productivity.

Whether you're working from home or looking to make your office space more comfortable, here are some tips to get you started on building a more productive and ergonomic workspace!

1. Computer Position

In this digital day and age, we are no strangers to computer screens. When it comes to monitor placement, keep your screen at eye level to avoid strain on your neck and shoulders. If you’re using a laptop for long hours, it can also cause excessive strain on your neck from looking down. Consider purchasing a laptop stand to elevate it and use a separate keyboard to allow your arms to rest more comfortably on your desk.

2. Desk Height

A standard desk height is typically 70 cm to 80 cm high (27 - 30 inches), however, it’s important to consider your height and body proportions before making your purchase. When sitting down, your arms should be able to rest comfortably on the desk at a 90-degree angle. A shorter or taller table will cause strain and tension on your shoulders.

One of the solutions for creating an ergonomic workplace is to get an adjustable smart standing desk. This allows you to customise your workspace exactly to your comfort, and you can alternate between sitting and standing throughout the day. Long hours of sitting have been linked to an increased risk of back pain, high blood pressure, and more, so getting a standing desk is also beneficial to your health.

3. Chair Design

An ergonomic chair might be the most important thing in your workspace, especially if you spend most of your day sitting. Protect your back by getting a chair with sufficient lumbar support. This means the chair should have a curve to support your back. Ideally, your chair should also have adjustable armrests to support the entire length of your forearm when typing. Additionally, the height of your chair should allow your feet to rest flat and firm on the floor. If your feet don’t reach the ground, consider getting a footstep for a more comfortable position.

If you're using a standing desk, don't forget to keep yourself comfortable with an anti-fatigue mat. An anti-fatigue mat alleviates the pressure on your feet and reduces fatigue on your legs and body. This provides greater comfort, allowing you to work longer in a standing position.

4. Maintain Good Posture

While having ergonomic products will help you get more comfortable at work, ensuring that you maintain proper sitting posture at the computer is just as important! Whether you’re sitting or standing, ensure you maintain an upright position. Avoid slouching or tilting your head towards your computer, as this will cause strain on your shoulders, neck and back. For those without a standing desk, consider standing up or walking around every hour to avoid sitting for long periods of time.
